beck - the love of my life
Last wednesday I wandered across Hammersmith Bridge and around the corner to the Hammersmith Apollo, nervous with anticipation. I sat there second row from the front in the centre of the circle waiting for an hour, when a support finally came on. He was ok. Beck's band came out half an hour later, dressed in white shirts black pants and white sneakers, looking very much like kraftwerk.
Then beck came out! *sigh* They played an amazing show, very energetic and enthusiastic considering the crowd was a bit tame. One of the band members didn't seem to actually play anything except the tambourine and a big smashed up bin. He spent most of the time on the front of the stage doing robotic dance moves in the spotlight. Anyway they played all Beck's big hits like Loser & Devil's Haircut and it all rocked, I was really surprised that he still embraced his old hits so much.
Then came the moment I'd been waiting for. He got out his acoustic guitar and his band sat down. They didn't just sit back stage though. No, they sat at a dining table on stage next to Beck and proceeded to eat a meal of sausages, soup, salad and wine. Beck played a short little interlude from Sea Change which was very beautiful. He also played 'Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometimes' from the Eternal Sunshine soundtrack which brought me very close to tears.
To top off everything he started playing Golden Age, my favourite song from Sea Change. The most amazing thing happened- the drummer, who was still sitting at the dinner table, started playing the main keyboard melody on the wine glasses! I can't explain how cool it was. By the end of the song everyone in the band was playing the wine glasses and bowls with their spoons... and most of the time it was in tune. It may sound weird but they pulled it off, actually it was amazing. The energy in the Apollo was crazy after that. They finished off the set with some more of Beck's new album, which was really good but I wouldn't have cared either way, I was still on a high from the table fiasco.
So there we go, my Beck experience. I will marry this man.
