destination.... italy!

I forgot to put this on the blog, but I have chosen my destination (thanks for everyone's input, sorry for letting our people down Jaan) and it's Italy! Flying to Genoa in two weeks and spending a few days in Cinque Terre then on to Florence via Pisa for a few more days of strolling around. I got pretty reasonable flights with Ryan Air.

I'm so excited, I've been looking at pictures of Cinque Terre everyday, drawling and wishing I was there, and Florence is the main Italian city I want to experience, I've read a fair bit about it's history and can't wait to just walk around it!

Everyone pray for nice weather for me. Pity there's no sand at the beaches : (

choose becky's own adventure

Well since Adelle, Jaan and Dad have suceeded in not helping me out at all by each voting for a different country, the slate is wiped clean for Becky's next travel adventures and I'm starting a whole new vote! Sorry Adelle but I'm not feeling such an appetite to Spain anymore, I'm feeling very seduced by Cinque Terra in Italy or Estonia. If anyone else has any ideas please suggest them!

A) Cinque Terra
B) Tallin and possibly Saareema in Estonia
C) Other - Please specify

this is why I'm here!

This week has reminded me of why I'm in this lovely country. It's full of excellent opportunities and there are many more to come!

I decided to go to wimbledon thursday afternoon while I was working, and a couple of hours later there I was! It was so great to walk into the grounds of wibledon and hear the roars of the crowds in centre court. Too bad I couldn't afford to go in there! I did get to sneak into the stands at court 2 though, although that's not much of a feat. I saw an excellent doubles game between two short englishmen and some croatian guys. It was SO close that on the last set or game or whatever it is, they called it off because there was no way it could finish before the sun went down. It was an excellent atmosphere, a few too many brits in the crowd though. I ended up having to go for the underdogs in true aussie style. I could never play a sport where there is an umpire or referee calling all the shots though, I don't know how the professionals cope! One of the line calls was so obviously wrong that the croatian player was abusing the umpire and even threw his tennis racket at the ground! Great stuff. It was excellent just to know that I was a (very minor) witness to such an important event, so I'm so happy I went.

Friday and Saturday I went to a music festival in Hyde Park called Wireless. The promoters said it was to promote 'up-and-coming' bands but I think that all the real bands were probably in the mud bath at glastonbury. That said though we had an excellent time, I have a wristband giving me express and free entry, access to the guest area and toilet vans that were so clean and classy that they had vanities, gold taps and even toilet paper! Now that is luxury for a festival!

Friday night The Bravery, Moby and New Order were headliners and last ngith it was Basement Jaxx. I'm most looking forward to Wednesday night cos Supergrass are playing! Woo Hoo. Sorry Adelle I didn't get to say high to Basement Jaxx for you! They were excellent though.

I'm also going to see Mary Poppins the musical for Jess's birthday this week, should be lots os fun. Going to attempt to make apricot chicken for everyone for dinner, I bought a huge can of apricot nector from the australia shop and it cost me a fortune! Mum if you see this monday morning can you please tell me what else to put in apricot chicken?

Had a picnic in holland park today then went to the movies, the squirils in that park are crazy, they'll jump on your head if it means they get food! Aparently there are bunnies and foxes in there but I didn't see any, there were a couple of peacocks walking around which I thought was pretty cool for a park in the middle of London. I'm so happy that I live where I do though, it's so close to heaps of cool parks and pubs, this summer should be well wicked! hehe

Best be off home for the night, haven't had much sleep lately and starting to get a bit tired!

Adam, Claire, Kate and Joakim. Kicked out at 11 by impatient publicans.

friends arrive and bring the sun with them

Had a great sunny weekend with Kate and Joakim in London. They arrived at Stansted Airport on Wednesday night at 11pm and we didn't get home till 3am. Stupid London transport... brilliant during the day but terrible the second the clock stikes midnight.

I FINALLY went to Westminster Abbey, we spent a few hours in there staring at all the tombs. Every section was so jam packed with statues and tombs that it looked like someone's over-stuffed shed. Some amazing and very very old architecture, but no where near as beautiful as Leeds Minster.

We had a pretty busy weekend, the West End, Camden Markets, a picnic in Hyde Park, Greenwich and three videos. And the most stunning night at a very old pub on the river called The Dove with Adam and Claire. The weather has been amazing for almost a week, it's very strange. None of us know how to cope, everyone except the english are whingeing, it's so hot!
Have some new photos to come from the night at the pub, keep your eyes peeled!

Still can't ecide where I want to travel first, think I will be going on a tour later with Jess but before that it'll either be Spain, Estonia, or the Italian coast.

Here's a task for everyone this week: everyone must vote for becky's next destination!

a) Italy
b) France
c) Estonia
d) Other

Get voting!

beck - the love of my life

Last wednesday I wandered across Hammersmith Bridge and around the corner to the Hammersmith Apollo, nervous with anticipation. I sat there second row from the front in the centre of the circle waiting for an hour, when a support finally came on. He was ok. Beck's band came out half an hour later, dressed in white shirts black pants and white sneakers, looking very much like kraftwerk.

Then beck came out! *sigh* They played an amazing show, very energetic and enthusiastic considering the crowd was a bit tame. One of the band members didn't seem to actually play anything except the tambourine and a big smashed up bin. He spent most of the time on the front of the stage doing robotic dance moves in the spotlight. Anyway they played all Beck's big hits like Loser & Devil's Haircut and it all rocked, I was really surprised that he still embraced his old hits so much.

Then came the moment I'd been waiting for. He got out his acoustic guitar and his band sat down. They didn't just sit back stage though. No, they sat at a dining table on stage next to Beck and proceeded to eat a meal of sausages, soup, salad and wine. Beck played a short little interlude from Sea Change which was very beautiful. He also played 'Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometimes' from the Eternal Sunshine soundtrack which brought me very close to tears.

To top off everything he started playing Golden Age, my favourite song from Sea Change. The most amazing thing happened- the drummer, who was still sitting at the dinner table, started playing the main keyboard melody on the wine glasses! I can't explain how cool it was. By the end of the song everyone in the band was playing the wine glasses and bowls with their spoons... and most of the time it was in tune. It may sound weird but they pulled it off, actually it was amazing. The energy in the Apollo was crazy after that. They finished off the set with some more of Beck's new album, which was really good but I wouldn't have cared either way, I was still on a high from the table fiasco.

So there we go, my Beck experience. I will marry this man.
